Obama’s illegal-alien uncle was in immigration court today, to try and win permanent residency and quash a decades-old deportation order.
Onyango Obama, a Kenyan national who was ordered deported in 1992, appeared before immigration judge Leonard I. Shapiro — the same judge who granted asylum to Obama’s sister, Zeituni Onyango, in 2010.
Today’s hearing was set nearly a year ago, when Obama moved to expedite the case and avoid what could have been a years-long battle to stay in the country. Experts say Obama would claim it’s too dangerous for him to return to Kenya, and that he would cite the 1998 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi as evidence.
Obama, the half-brother of the president’s late father, had been living quietly in Framingham and working as a liquor-store clerk until a drunken-driving arrest in 2011 brought his immigration status to light. The case was continued without a finding.
